Happy National Dog Day!

August 26 has been playfully declared National Dog Day!  In order to celebrate the day, I wanted to introduce my sweet Pug, Miguel!  Earlier this year, my husband and I went to the Dessin Animal Shelter in Honesdale, as we had been thinking about adopting a dog for a while.  We strolled through the isle of pens peeking in at the eager faces and reading their brief profiles posted outside their doors describing the animal's name, breed, and temperament.

In the back row of pens, we noticed a tiny little Pug with a great big cough!  The sweet boy padded over to say hello and had the cutest little whine when he greeted me.  We asked one of the shelter attendants why he was all by himself. We were informed that this dog had Kennel Cough, which we learned is a common respiratory virus, and the shelter employees were trying to keep the other animals from contracting it.  This virus is treated with antibiotics just as a human virus would be.

I fell in love with Miguel that day.  When we brought him home the next week I was asked over and over again, "Really, you guys picked the SICK one!?" We did, and after a round of antibiotics my little Pug is a happy boy who loves to snuggle, snack on apples and roll in the grass.

Shelter dogs are just as wonderful and loving as dogs from breeders.  I am so thankful every day I've had my Miguel and would like to thank Dessin Animal Shelter from my heart for saving him.

So, happy National Dog Day from Miguel and I!  When you're ready to start looking for an animal friend, Dessin is a great place, their volunteers and staff were helpful and kind.
